HORDAK

HORDAK, introduced into the MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE line in 1985, was the leader of a new villainous faction called 'THE HORDE', a new group for He-Man and his cohorts to fight...at least that's how it happened in the imaginations of fans of the series on playgrounds and the floors of bedrooms during the 1980's. Sadly, animation-wise, he wound up being relegated to the SHE-RA series as HER nemesis! Needless to say I never saw an episode of that and only had the original figure to go off of, so thank GOD for online resources which allowed me to come up with my rendition of the ruler of Etheria. Basically he has done what Skeletor couldn't do, conquered an entire world. Amazing how he gets put in a cartoon for girls and yet his team is basically the most horrific of the factions of the entire MOTU universe.

His original figure was unique looking to say the least. His large bat-symbol across his chest, the large dread-less Predator-shaped head, and that...what the hell was it, a bone-rimmed post-surgery dog collar? Yeah, a few things were going to change in this remake of mine. I felt that if he was going to be an evil ruler of an entire planet, then he had to look the part, hence the excessive leather outfit. A few nods were taken from the 200X version as the original version really didn't look the part. Also, all you have to do is look at the original animated version to know FILMATION dropped the ball. Plus, for some reason when the original line came out, each member of the Horde came with a cross-bow...I don't know what but they did. If Hordak is going to be some all-conquering bad-ass, wouldn't he be more of an up close and personal combatant?

So I came up with a bladed staff for him to use. However, upon reading more up on the character I found that, while being a wizard, he leaned more towards technology so I made his staff into something more of a light-saber. With the size I drew him originally at, the paper wasn't tall enough to include a redesigned version of the staff he was given in his 21st Century redesign. Also in my re-imagined version of his collar, he has a computer-bank that classically reflects what he has in front of him on his face like the computers in movies do. As for him suddenly having a head of hair, I based that, and expanded upon it, from the fact that he had a mohawk in the stills I saw from his appearances in SHE-RA.

I only ever had the original version of the figure and there was just something about the way he looked that changed the way I played with my He-Man figures. The Fright Zone, the Slime-Pit, Mantenna, Mosquitor...it just lent an element of horror to the entire line. Sadly he never appeared in the original MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE animated series and was placed in a bright and shiny girlie cartoon. Because of that, unless boys actually HAD the figures, they wouldn't have had a clue about the very existence of the Horde and its brutal leader.

To me, such a choice was why the line eventually failed.

Out of the three you've showed me, this one looks the most formidable and powerful. Much of it must be due to the black and red color scheme, spikes, and bone-colored skin. The whole suit is well geared, but I particularly like the red orbs covering his knees :XD:

Thank you :D He was an original looking figure back in the day for sure. The knee pads carry a unifying theme for the rest of his team in my project here
